The Practice Session
This is the core of your learning journey in Sakugo. The Practice Session is the core of your Sakugo journey, where you'll actively use what you know to create Japanese from scratch.
The Practice Loop
Each session follows a simple, powerful loop designed to build and reinforce your skills.
1. Get Your Prompt You'll be given an English sentence to translate. Our AI generates these prompts specifically for you, focusing on vocabulary that's relevant to your JLPT level and ready for you to practice. (Learn more about this in our guide on SRS Mastery Levels).
2. Craft Your Translation Now, it's your turn! In the text box, write the most natural-sounding Japanese translation you can. Don't worry about being perfect. If you can't remember a specific word, try describing it with other words you know. Imagine you're in a real conversation and need to get your point across to a Japanese speaker.
3. Get Instant Feedback Once you submit your sentence, our AI tutor will analyze it. This process usually takes ~30 seconds (we are working on making this faster!).
Understanding Your Feedback
You'll receive detailed feedback on your submission, including:
- A Rating: A quick gauge of how natural and understandable your sentence was (Amazing / Great / Okay / So-so / Wrong). Generally, a rating of "Okay" or better means you successfully communicated your message!
- Overall Comments: Just below your translation, you'll often see a summary from the AI tutor explaining the main issues with your sentence, if any.
- Inline Corrections: Your original sentence may have parts highlighted. Hover over them to see specific comments on grammar mistakes or unnatural phrasing.
- A Model Translation: We'll show you an example of a correct, natural-sounding translation for comparison.
- Mastery Level Updates: See which vocabulary words from the sentence have had their SRS mastery levels updated. If you made a mistake or missed a key word, you can tap the vocabulary cards to learn more about them. You'll get another chance to practice them after the SRS cooldown is over.
After reviewing your feedback, just click "Continue" to get your next sentence!
The AI isn't perfect. If you feel a rating was unfair or want to challenge a mastery level change, click the small info icon next to the updated word and select "Undo".
Sometimes, you'll find a clever workaround or use a synonym, and our AI tutor will often reward you for it! This is great, but you might feel that you didn't get to practice the specific target word. If you want to ensure that word comes up for practice again soon, you can use the "Undo" button on its mastery update to keep it in your active rotation.
